Nuance by Salma Hayek Review and Tutorial Video

Third Look, Nuance Smokey Quad

Hello, Lovelies!

This morning, I uploaded a triple tutorial using the Smokey Quad from Salma Hayek’s new Nuance line that’s in CVS. In the video, I mistakenly alluded to the fact that other drugstores may have her line, but you can only find it in CVS. Now that I have corrected that mistake, I have to tell you, this was the most challenging video I have created to date–it was such a bear to make! Along with my usual challenges (lighting, saying “ooookay, ummm, and absolutely!” entirely too often), I had FOUR children running around at the time! Ack! On top of all that, my cat just had a litter of kittens. Wow. What a day yesterday was! But, all in all, I am really proud of this tutorial. More than anything, I am (slowly) getting more comfortable in front of the camera. My nervousness is going away. Michelle Phan I am not, but with each attempt I come more into my own.

Such Cute Packaging!

Okay, so enough about me–let’s move on to the Smokey Quad. Since this is my first formal review, I want to establish the rating system I will use from now on. I first thought of doing something cutesy, like rating in terms of Chocolate Chips since my nickname is Cookie, but I decided against it because it might be confusing. So, I will just use a 0-20 scale (but you can consider it up to 20 Chocolate Chips if you prefer). For eyeshadows, I will rate them in the following terms:

1. Consistency/Pigmentation: Up to 6 points. This, for me, is the most important factor when rating an eyeshadow–therefore, I wanted to give it the highest overall weight. Does this eyeshadow fall apart before I even get to use it? Does it have good color payoff? These sorts of things will fall into this category.

2. Blendability: Up to 4 points. Does this eyeshadow play well with others? Does it take forever to blend out? Does it blend away as soon as I put it on? All of these properties fall into this category, and it is an important one in judging the overall quality of a shadow!

3. Range of Colors: Up to 3 points. This is extremely important in terms of rating a palette or quad. Are all the shadows needed in the palette? What have they chosen for a highlight color? Are there any matte colors? These are the things I consider when determining Range of Color points.

4. Packaging/Delivery System: Up to 3 points. For an eyeshadow, this includes things such as durability of the case, whether or not it comes with a brush, is the brush/applicator appropriate to apply the shadow(s) inside, etc.

5. Staying Power: Up to 4 points–and another extremely important category! What does this eyeshadow look like after a long day at work? Plain and simple, it could be the most beautiful looking eyeshadow in the world, but if it doesn’t stay on then its still a dud in my book.

Nuance by Salma Hayek Smokey Quad Review

17/20

1. Consistency/Pigmentation: 4 out of 6 Total Points
2. Blendability: 4 out of 4 Total Points
3. Range of Colors: 2 out of 3 Total Points
4. Packaging/Delivery System: 3 out of 3 Total Points
5. Staying Power: 4 out of 4 Total Points

Okay, so 17 out of 20 isn’t too bad. I took off points for the first category because the darkest colors looked very similar when on my eyes. Also, the pigmentation was lacking in the pinky duochrome color. The product blended well on my eyes, but I would have liked to have seen a matte color or at least a better highlight option. The packaging is what really saved this quad, in terms of how I rated it–I am a sucker for great packaging! These colors also really stayed on my eyes! In fact, I really had to work to get the product off in between tutorials…

Tutoral Look #2

So, overall, I would recommend this quad if you need some unique options for smokey eyes. If you already have a good range of eyeshadows, then this may not be the perfect product for you. I have seen a lot of beauty bloggers and YouTubers say that they were disappointed in this quad, and really in the overall line, but I am not someone who has a ton of smokey shades so it was a good fit for me. I had no trouble at all finding ways to use this quad, either. That is always a plus, since I hate having to find other coordinating eyeshadows to make something work. If I were to use this quad for my everyday makeup, I would probably grab one of my matte white or flesh-toned eyeshadows for a brow highlight and be all set.

If you have this quad, I would love to hear what your thoughts are. How would you rate this eyeshadow? Do you like any other products from Nuance?

I love your tutorials! For the 3 looks for the Nuance smokey eye quad, is there any way to get a list of all the products you have used for these 3 looks? This tutorial was so awesome I want to try it at home but want to make sure I have all the right products. Any advice or help is greatly appreciated!
